Here is my bird list for Lost Lagoon Farm for the second half of February 2016.
The 52 species listed were seen on, over or from the property. Notable
omissions were gulls - I saw none! The pine siskins appear to have left for the
season, and I saw only one golden-crowned kinglet. We did get two life birds
for the property — 4 gadwalls were seen daily on the pond over about a 5-day
period, and I saw one eurasian wigeon among a flock of American wigeons,
bringing our total species list to 137. A big surprise this winter has been the
total absence of northern shovelers and ring-necked ducks, which we typically
see on a pond next to us. The absence of shovelers is particularly puzzling
given the very large numbers I’ve seen at Ridgefield. Can anyone explain?
