Hi all, Oscar and I made a quick late-afternoon run out to the Eicher ponds, trying to relocate Doug's flock of TRICOLORED BLACKBIRDS. After some scanning from the dike along Eicher Rd., we were able to locate 22 birds perched on some bushes on the other side of the pond. We were first alerted to their presence by the calls, which sounded distinctly different from a flock of Red-wings. We didn't get very good looks (and no photos), but in the scope we were able to get distant, yet diagnostic looks at the white-and-scarlet epaulettes of a couple of males. Also noticeable was that at a distance, the females appeared to be almost entirely blackish, with none of the warm brown or rusty tones usually apparent in Red-winged Blackbirds. Great find, Doug! Not too much else around, but 2 BLACK TERNS over the ponds seem noteworthy. Good midsummer birding Hendrik & Oscar -- __________________________ Hendrik G.
