Birders,

It is disappointing to learn that the upper Larch Mountain Road is still closed
despite the lack of snow. Is there some kind of opening/closing schedule that
they refuse to alter, never mind the snow conditions? Obviously, facilitating
public recreation is not high on the priority list for the people who are in
charge of this road.

In the case of another well-known mountain in western Oregon-- Marys Peak,
which is nearly as high as Larch Mountain-- they do seem to leave the road
open longer when it is snow-free. Why can’t they do this for Larch Mountain as
well?

Larch Mountain Road is still gated off just up from milepost 10, so you have to
walk to the top (a little over four miles)

John,

Is the road open all the way to the top parking area? If not, where is it
closed at? If there’s no snow, there’s no reason for it not to be open all the
way up, but it seems to me they have been late in opening it some years in the
past. (When you said “the top”, wasn’t sure if you meant the top parking area
or the top of the mountain, which is another ½ mile beyond that).

All the best,

Nala and I walked to the top of snowless Larch Mountain this morning. Diversity
was low, as expected this time of year, but there were some good birds around.
Best birds included:

Northern Saw-whet Owl (2 birds singing around mile 10.5)

Sooty Grouse (1 bird calling in the distance above milepost 13)

Red Crossbill (flyover flock)

Cheers,
