I have just read my last printed paper version of The Sandpiper, the
newsletter of Yaquina Birders and Naturalists. I have treasured these
newsletters for many years. I have curled up in bed to read the sightings.
I have carried the paper with me on weekend trips and read it in my car, at
the beach, under a tree, in a motel. It chronicled our collective sightings
in Lincoln County for more than a quarter century. It offered commentary on
seasonal phenology, abundance, and distribution of birds. It gave me great
information on other species as well.
Range Bayer was editor of The Sandpiper for 35 years and did the bird field
notes for 25.4 years. As he said in this last issue:
"We may read and think about our interest in birds at an intellectual level.
But through my interactions with bird watchers and their sharing of
sightings over the years, I have experienced this at a level that is not
possible for me to put into words."
Kudos to you, Range, you have done yeoman work for all of us.
Kathy Merrifield also wrote Other Nature Notes for The Sandpiper from 2001
to 2015. Her thorough research and good humor were a treasure.
Kudos to you too, Kathy.
I will miss this publication and the happiness it brought to my life.
Range and Kathy are stepping down to a well-earned rest. The printed
newsletter is being discontinued. Other fine people are stepping up to keep
Yaquina Birders & Naturalists alive. Thank you to Ram Papish, John
