The shorebird activity in the 2 northern most cells of Wapato marsh has changed
to mainly just the local breeders: Spotted sandpiper, killdeer and possible
breeder Wilson's phalarope. One male Wilson's has been observed a couple of
times this week. Today there was also a SEMI-PALMATED PLOVER in the area. The
migrating peeps and dowitchers and yellowlegs seem to be mostly, if not all,
gone, although some Greater Yellowlegs have been seen this week.
BLUE-WINGED TEAL are in the area.
There is a trail closure in effect for the north entrance. "The north end trail
gate has been locked and a portion of the north-south trail has been closed due
to down willow debris and future trail construction activities."
So trail access is only from the Education Center area at the south end, but
you can walk all the way to the north end of Wapato marsh and just a bit
further before you encounter the closure. Wapato marsh is the broad lowland
that occupies most of the preserve to the east of the north-south trail,
basically from Pintail Pond in the south to Oak Island Marsh at the north end.
If you use eBird hotspots for Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve, Wapato Marsh is
the same as Areas 1 - 5. If you have questions about the hotspots and how we
are utilizing them, please contact me. I'll be happy to fill you in.
In other news - the bald eagles continue with 2 healthy chicks in the nest, a
bit over a month old now. The osprey still appear to be incubating but eggs
could hatch anytime now we think. LAZULI BUNTINGS are singing away; SWAINSON'S
THRUSHES began singing this week; TREE SWALLOWS have ~ one week old nestlings
in 6 out of 31 boxes checked and we are assuming from behavior that the other
boxes are following the same time line.
