We often don't have the luxury of detail present in the third photo.
Fog, distance, back lighting so often frustrate these rare raptor moments. This
bird shows very pointy wings. I believe a Gyr has obviously rounded wingtips
relative to a Peregrine with P9, the second primary from the front, being
clearly longer than P10, the very front one. In a Peregrine P9 and P10 are
about the same length. Also the Peregrine has a much shorter tail. When
perched, the folded primaries end at the falcon's tail tip. A Gyrfalcon has a
tail that is much longer than the folded primaries. In fact all the native
Oregon falcons except Peregrine have tail extesion, and the Peregrine's flight
silhouette is sawed-off compared to the others. Lars
