At Broughton Beach today I got to watch a Great Blue Heron spend a
remarkably long time trying to swallow a remarkably large fish. A photo of

I initially watched for about 5 minutes while it alternated between resting
with its head down and the fish entirely in the water and making a
strenuous effort to swallow it. I returned about 30 minutes later and it
had made only a little progress. I then returned about 30 minutes after
that and the heron was sitting quietly on the shore with no sign of the
fish; I don't know if it actually swallowed it or gave up.
