For instance: when picking up a copy of Dave's book at Powell's I
encountered "Birding with a Purpose" by Fran Hamerstrom. Most of you have
encountered Fran's daughter Elva through the artwork in Birds of Oregon, A
General Reference.
Birding with a Purpose is a thoroughly engaging memoir published by
University of Wisconsin Press. I imagine it got one printing of very
limited number. Someone may have donated a copy to one of those programs
than scans old books and makes them available free on line. But l'm sure I
never would have gone searching for that title.

Discovering a rare volume in the local bookstore is sort of like finding a
good bird in your yard or neighborhood. It always brings a measure of
pleasure that you just can’t get at a big box bookstore, a major birding
hotspot, shopping online, or chasing rarities that someone else found.
