I'll be starting a new job at OSU in Corvallis. No more regular commutes to Albany. I rarely rode on HWY 20, choosing instead to ride a short distance on HWY 34 and then Riverside Drive. I'll miss that commute. Riverside Drive is low-traffic and good for birds and wildflowers. I rode all year long, in all weather except severe fog or icy roads. Otherwise I took the bus. I rode thousands of miles (6600 in the last 12 months). This year was the best since the recent creation of wetlands on Riverside Dr. (under the Wetland Reserve Program) in some of the farmer fields. It was great for shorebirds and ducks. I would have found more if I had the time to stop and look with a scope. Other birders have. 131 species for the 4 years. Without even looking for them, just riding by. Best finds: Grasshopper Sparrow (Spring 2010 on Bryant Dr near Albany) Townsend's Solitaire (2010 on Riverside Dr during spring migration) Clay-colored Sparrow (in residential Albany, winter 2012-13) Northern Bobwhite (2011 only once, maybe a pet that got loose) Mountain Quail (Spring 2011) Worst misses.
