Hi,
A Turkey Vulture in January in Lincoln County is a great sighting!
Thanks to Liz for posting it (see her email below). After reading her
post, I was curious about January TV records in Lincoln County.
In summary of the following searches, the first January records of a
TV in Lincoln Co. was in January 1995, with at least one record in
January in 6 of the 11 years during 1995-2015. Below are the
sources that I searched.
The Lincoln County eBird Illustrated Checklist shows the earliest
Turkey Vultures in early February

For Lincoln Co. records through 1992, we had no records in January,
but some in the first week of February (text search repeatedly for
"Turkey" to find "Vulture, Turkey" records on p. 135 at
https://ir.library.oregonstate.edu/concern/conference_proceedings_or_journals/cv43p2365
I don't understand why a text search does not find the compiled
vulture records by searching for "Vulture." But OSU kindly converted
the paper copy to digital and there may have been a glitch in the
digitizing.)
For 1993-2015 Lincoln Co. records included in the bird field notes
(which ceased at the end of 2015) in the Yaquina Birders & Naturalists
newsletter (the Sandpiper), I found the following January records by
text searching for "vulture"
(http://yaquina.info/ybn/bird/bird.htm#1993-2015). In most other
years, the first records were in February, though in some years the
first was in March.
1995. "CP has given us our first ever January report of a TURKEY
VULTURE; he discovered one feeding on a dead deer just south of Toledo
on 1/1."
1996. "An unseasonal TURKEY VULTURE was reported for Hidden Valley on
1/13 (T&AM) ...."
1998. "A very early TURKEY VULTURE was a mile south of Siletz on 1/21 (JB)."
1999. "One TURKEY VULTURE south of Toledo during the 1/2 YBCBC was a
first for our CBC and a winter rarity here. Perhaps the same one was
at Nute Slough on 1/4 (CP)."
2000. "An unseasonal TURKEY VULTURE flew over Yachats on 1/17 (KM)."
2015. "A TURKEY VULTURE at Salmon River on 1/26 (DV) was probably a
vagrant rather than the vanguard of spring migration. "One vulture
doth not Spring make" though we had a lot of nice weather in January."
