Subject: Orange-crowned Warblers, raptors, prairie plants, and lost &
found camera items at E.E. Wilson Wildlife Area

Hi all,
On a walk around the southwest part of E.E. Wilson Wildlife Area just
now, I came across an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER that was gleaning among
willow blossoms, calling occasionally but not singing (it appeared to be
a female). I heard similar call notes in two other places along the
walk, so I think there were likely at least three Orange-crowned
Warblers in that area.
A female NORTHERN HARRIER flew over to interact with a perched male, who
flew off ahead of her. It wasn't quite a courtship flight -- no
roller-coaster displays by the male yet -- but they might be doing those
soon.
Nearby a RED-SHOULDERED HAWK (probably the same adult that's been
around) complained out loud when a TURKEY VULTURE swooped too low. I saw
Turkey Vultures throughout the walk, including up to 5 at once,
ascending on a thermal with a RED-TAILED HAWK tagging along behind.
In the distance off to the north, an OSPREY was flapping around between
the headquarters and the angling pond where Mike Lippsmeyer has been
seeing one since last month.
The prairie remnant where Native Plant Society of Oregon and Corvallis
Audubon volunteers helped clear invasive woody brush last fall is
looking good, with lots of Oregon Geranium and Checkermallow sp., some
sedges, Night-blooming Morning-glory, Tough-leaved Iris and Blue-eyed
Grass in a few places, and one Lupine sp. (likely Kincaid's Lupine)
putting up its first leaves of spring. Some weeds too, so there will be
more work to do this year ...
LOST & FOUND ITEMS: North of there, next to the big oak woods up on the
hilltop, I found a memory card from a camera, along with a LED-type
pushbutton mini-flashlight. If you lost something like this please let
me know. If I don't hear from someone in the next day or so, I'll take
it over to the office to add to their pile of lost & found stuff.
