This was the guy who was only singing a partial song. I spend about 20 minutes in the area, surveying the vegetation structure around the area where I found him, but did not detect any Vesper Sparrows. Brandon Wagner did find him singing there on May 27th and got a recording of the song, so the Vesper Sparrow must have stuck around for a few days at least. But my guess is that he never found a mate, and eventually moved on. I also did not detect any sign of a Grasshopper Sparrow that sang just a couple of times while I was out there for my previous survey (while I was getting set up at a point, so he didn't even make it into the count). Brandon didn't detect him either. So my guess is that guy didn't stick around for very long at all, despite that a pair was present and apparently nested in this same restoration field, last year. There are lots of nice upland prairie grasses out there -- California oatgrass, blue wildrye, and Roemer's fescue -- and they have a nice, open structure in many areas. So hopefully more grassland sparrows will find this patch in future years.
