Wednesday Birders of ECAS worked our way around Wickiup and some of Crane
Prairie today. Our bird of the day was a RED KNOT. Thanks to Cathy Beck for
getting some photos. She had to sneak around and back down to hide behind a
big upended stump/tree roots to get close enough for some photos. She
managed photos without flushing the birds. This was just west of the North
Boat Ramp, which we used to call Gull Point. The Gull point campground is
gated closed. We had seen a flock of shorebirds come past us and land there,
so, walking from the boat ramp to the right/west, about 100 or 150 + yards,
we could see the flock on the shoreline. The bird was with about 40 or so LB
Dowitchers and several Killdeer and one Wilson's Snipe. I don't know how
many county records exist for it but it was a new Deschutes bird for
everyone in the group and a nice bird to see inland for sure.

From the boat ramp area we could see rafts of birds too distant to identify
but having suspicion, we drove around and walked a ways in soft sand to find
about 30 Common Loons and one SURF SCOTER. People muttered about a smaller
loon but no one found a Pacific although Lew Rems saw one there a few days
ago. A Prairie Falcon hunted small birds in the area of stumps on dry beach.
Two or 3 Horned and many Eared Grebes and many Westerns were there. We had
no Chestnut backed Chickadees today but we spent a few minutes looking in
our "usual" seasonal place at Cow Camp. (old name, now signs call it Cow
Meadow).

List below of our birds. I will write a separate note for COBOL on the Red
Knot and encourage other birders from today to do the same if I miss
something important.
