OBOL- I birded Fern Ridge Reservoir (near Eugene) for several hours this morning and early afternoon. Lots of birds, but no Golden Plover. I walked south of the Royal Ave observation platform past the pond where the bird was reported and over to the Barn Pond; then retraced my steps back again to the Royal Obs platform. Bumped into a few other birders, who also reported no Plover. The area where the bird was reported yesterday is one of those “lumpy” shorebird sites with shallow water holding innumerable little muddy islets and grassy hillocks (and at least 20 Killdeer)…the bird could easily escape detection. For those unfamiliar with the area; this pond is along the eastern side of the dike/path that runs south from the Royal Ave Obs platform. If you continue south on this path, you leave the water behind. The path then turns east toward the Barn Pond (named for the old barn seen on the hill overlooking the pond). I haven’t birded FRR for about 4 wks. Lots of standard bird activity with a few notables… Bl-necked Stilt: 5 adults Am Avocet: 4 adults (last year, a pair successfully brought 2 off the nest…one survived the summer) Spotted Sandpiper: 1 Redhead: 2 pair Canvasback: 1 pair Blue-winged Teal: 3 pair Barry McKenzie Eugene OBOL archives: www.freelists.org/archive/obol Manage your account or unsubscribe: //www.freelists.org/list/obol Contact moderators: obol-moderators@xxxxxxxxxxxxx
