With so many resident species starting to sing, I was delighted this morning to
hear my FOY RED-BREASTED SAPSUCKER in our SW Portland neighborhood. But it was
a little odd, since I first heard a descending mewing call that had an odd
timbre, reminiscent of (eastern) Blue Jay, if that makes sense to people. A
minute later I heard the typical mewing note of a sapsucker not far away, so
I’m sure that’s what the first call was (though I never saw the bird).
As an old birding friend of mine from college days used to say – "there’s
always a goodie”…always something new to learn and enjoy.
