As someone who routinely withholds location data at the request of
concerned homeowners unless and until I have been given the all clear,
I was afraid this was going to happen. Being "denied" a rare bird does
seem to bring out the worst in some people, just as turning a nationwide
horde of birders loose on an unsuspecting neighborhood often has
parallel negative consequences. Much of the commentary I have read does
not reflect well on the birding community, nor is it likely to soften
the opinions of those who choose not to share their rarities.
I've have said this before and I will say it again now, 99% of
birders are nice, responsible, polite and grateful, but it's that
1% that will be remembered when misdeeds do occur.
We should thank Mr DeMoulin for sharing the record and move on.
