Birded around Detroit east of Salem this morning with Jim Kopitzke. Above
town along FR 2225 we heard several SOOTY GROUSE. HERMIT WARBLERS were
singing almost everywhere, and we got good looks at a male TOWNSEND'S.
Higher up, where the coniferous forest gives way to chaparral we watched a
pair of CHIPPING SPARROWS with Manzanita, Lomatium, Oregon White Oak(!),
and a very cooperative female CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD was just above them.
We heard several MACGILLIVRAY'S WARBLERS, saw a nice GRAY FLYCATCHER, and
then a WESTERN KINGBIRD (almost common here in migration, same reason as
Gray Flycatcher and other mainly eastside birds, it's on the way). There
were about 8 NORTHERN ROUGH WINGED SWALLOWS and some SWIFTS.
Along Duckflat Road, SE of Salem we saw foy 2 WILSON'S PHALAROPES.
