Jack,
Unrelated to the original question, but your note about the Song Sparrow
reminded me of a funny incident I once saw in Toledo. A House Sparrow was
running across the parking lot of a store, jumping up every five feet or so in
an attempt to catch a fairly large moth flying about a foot off the ground. For
some reason the moth never changed altitude. The sparrow chased it all the way
across the entire parking lot, probably seventy yards or so. After jumping up
at it probably twenty five or thirty times, it finally succeeded in catching
it.

My answer to your question is No.
But coincidentally, Jill and I saw a Song Sparrow hawking moths out of the air
at the edge of small stream yesterday. They are surprisingly agile.
