I talked to Terry Wahl today who often finds interesting birds while working on the family ranch near Cape Blanco. He had a bunch of bird updates for me, here are the highlights: LARK SPARROWS: one today, 27 Aug., on the family ranch one on the 24th west of Langlois on a different private ranch one last week (maybe the 20th, not sure on the exact date) on the family ranch WESTERN KINGBIRD: one today on the family ranch- first one since a late July(!) bird there (unusual time for a coastal record- the late July record). W. Kingbirds are much less common in the fall than the spring on the outer coast so this is a "good" bird. YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD: one on the family ranch today. NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD: one last week- the week of the 20th, on the family ranch; it was there about three days. Today in Gold Beach I saw about 600 ELEGANT TERNS. There were around 500 in the harbor area on the rocks off the boat docks and on the boat docks. There was another 100 or so flying around in the river mouth and out over the ocean. At one point all 500 birds rose up, tightly packed, and flew back and forth around the harbor area just above the water- looked like a tight shorebird flock as it wheeled back and forth. It then exploded upwards into more of a cloud of terns flying all around the harbor area. About half the terns disappeared and the other half came in and landed synchronitistically from west to east on the dock in less than a minute. Very cool to watch these big Elegant flocks in action! 70's in many locations along the coast today again- gorgeous weather. Merry migration, Tim Rodenkirk Coos Bay
