On 28 December Doug Robinson spotted a N MOCKINGBIRD at a house across Pony
Slough from the old, now gated entrance to the Pony Point road in N Bend. I
saw the eBird report and asked him about it. Yesterday I went to the west
end of Florida St. and refound the mocker in a very kacky back yard with
feeders. The place was loaded with sparrows and had several holly bushes
which Mockers seem to love. That makes 4 overwintering mockers in
Coos/Curry this winter.
Doug also reported 14 REDHEAD at the old Weyco pond site, a huge number for
Coos. I was only able to find 4 yesterday. There was 40+ CANVASBACKS there
also and hundreds of scaup and Ring-neckeds, the perfect combo for a Tufted
Duck but no luck there.
Barb Griffin reported her male BULLOCK'S ORIOLE still around in N Bend and
Lance Nelson saw their female in Coos Bay yesterday also.
On eBird I noticed Skip Russell had a SE OWL at the Bandon N Jetty area on
the 2nd so a count week bird for the Coquille Valley CBC.
Barb Taylor had a TURKEY VULTURE in N Bend on the 5th which could be our
first migrant or maybe one of the overwintering birds from the SE end of
the bay. This is about the time we start to see migrants the past few years
though. Rufous Hummers should be back in 3-4 weeks, spring is coming soon!
