Joel brought up the issue of recounting birds...the example he gave was:
As a real example from this year's Oakridge CBC, suppose I walk out
along a spur road in the forest and encounter five Chestnut-backed
Chickadees (CBCHs). On my way back I encounter five CBCHs in roughly
the same stretch of road, but also seven in another spot.
He asks, "Should my total count of CBCHs for that road be 5, 12, or 17?"
My response is I would have a total count of 7 CBCHs. Maybe this is
somewhat conservative but I figure the 5 earlier CBCHs could have flown
away and met up with 2 other CBCHs for a total of 7. But after hearing in
earlier posts from Dave and others that most people underestimate count
totals maybe my method is too conservative.
