Mike,
This is a Cooper's hawk. A flat line separates the black cap from the rusty
cheek, which extends back toward the nape. Sharp-shins don't show that
clear separation.

Hello. New to this list and I apologize in advance if this is not the
purpose of the list. I'm also a relatively new birder (going on 2+
years). Had this hawk land right outside our kitchen window in SW Portland
a couple days ago. I think it's a Coopers Hawk (especially from the head
markings) but it seemed a little small so thought it might be a
sharp-shinned. Would appreciate confirmation. And loving the listserv
after just a few days :-)
