Greetings All,
Any stray warbler that appears in Portland in January is likely to be here a
while presuming that it doesn't meet some other end. It won't migrate, or
probably even move more than a block or two from where it is now. This bird has
found a source of food (vital) and cover, which is also imperative. Given the
stresses of the exceptionally cold weather, this Black-throated Blue Warbler is
probably using every calorie it ingests on basic survival. It was seen flying
back and forth across Virginia Ave. between the densely vegetated area between
the orange and blue houses and then over to the dense hedge across the street
on the NW corner of the intersection of SW Virginia Ave. and SW Texas Street.
To my knowledge, it hasn't been seen anywhere else. Pulling out and attempting
to move elsewhere now would like be a fatal choice. It's already been present
for four days that we know of, which suggests that it is settled in where it's
at.

Subject: [obol] Re: Black-throated Blue Warbler in Portland in 2005
I checked my old records and see that I had seen a Black-throated Blue Warbler
in SE Portland on January 11, 2005, and then again on February 19, 2005. This
was in a yard well stocked with feeders. I don't know the exact arrival date
but it obviously stayed for an extended period of time.
The bird reported today seems to have arrived on a similar date, and is also in
someone's yard that apparently is well kept with feeders. This history is
encouraging for those who are waiting for better road conditions before trying
to see it.
