I began birding full time at age nine. I was routinely offended by the
portrayal of a "chicken hawk" on Warner Bros. cartoons. The hawk was at best
one fifth the size of Rhode Island Red, his erstwhile prey. As an adult I have
come to realize that there was a grain of truth in the caricature. At least one
artist in the studio must have had a rural upbringing and made observations
similar to Darrel's. Lars
