This morning Becky alerted me to a vast "kettle" of Turkey Vultures rising up
out of the conifer plantation on buffer lands for the Coffin Butte landfill, to
the north of us. I ran back to grab my camera but by the time I got back, they
had moved over Tampico Ridge to the west. This first photo captures about 100
of them but it's only a fraction of the flock -- I was guessing 150 to 200.
The second photo shows the beautiful young Gray Fox that I found as road kill
yesterday, along Hwy 99W near Jackson-Frazier Wetland on the north side of
Corvallis. I moved it to a place where migrant vultures and other scavengers
can find it, without becoming victims of fast-moving vehicles themselves.
Though as of this morning, the main scavengers were of the 6-legged variety
(flies and yellowjackets working on the top side while beetles scavenged from
below).
