On July 25th, Nancy Thomas and Laura Paulson observed and photographed a color
banded Caspian Tern along the HMSC trail at Yaquina Bay. On the right leg it
had a light green band over a silver(metal) band over another light green band.
On the left leg it had a red band over 2 blue bands. I reported this sighting
for them to the BBL and they could not determine the individual bird so the BBL
forwarded the observation to Oregon State University who banded the bird.
Today, I heard from Timothy Lawes and Daniel Roby reporting that this
individual was banded as a chick on East Sand Island in the lower Columbia
River in 2003 so it is now 18 years old. This individual has a history of
nesting at East Sand Island and also at Sheepy Lake in Lower Klamath Lake NWR.
In other words, it gets around.
