Pygmy Owl, about 7:20 when l went out to unload the car from the Yaquina
CBC campaign. I heard it while still in bed last New Year's Day. The last
time l attempted a year's list(1996?) the property was fogged in from dawn
'til dusk. I heard a Raven first of all, probably below me , as the
landscape falls away rapidly to the east. The creation myth reenacted
although , given the persistent fog, Niflheim endured until sunrise the
following day and Raven never gave form to Earth . I stayed on our quarter
of a quarter section all day, with ten species the final tally, my last
finger being Bubo virginianus. In between,

The forest continued its purposeful pursuit of Sol by about 1,3m a year and
we lost the Great Horned Owls, then much later the Bewick's Wren. This
autumn Weyco clear clearcut on three sides of our property . The winter sun
now streams in along the southern boundary after nearly two decades
hivernal gloom and l look forward to their return, along with Mountain
