Hard to know how the barred owl ended up with the barn owl. The observation
was made during the day so the predation or scavenge event likely occurred
during the day. Barred owls are common here now and in fact one was killed by
a car about 10 days ago on Hwy 101 very near this same location.

Bad News. Were photos taken day or night?
Day I guess if SS Hawk nearby. So likely it captured the Barn Owl during the
day?
Could the Barn Owl have been roadkill? As owls go they are fairly often hit
by cars due to their hunting habits.
Generally Barn Owls are more open country and Barred Owls the opposite,
aren't they?
Was there a barn owl roost nearby? For instance a barn. Generally Barn Owls
are not very diurnal, unlike Barred Owls.

Tim Fisher sent me some cell phone photos he took yesterday in a forested
area of Bayshore near Waldport. He heard and saw a sharp-shinned hawk
making a racket then noticed a nearby barred owl feeding on another bird.
His photos clearly show that the barred owl was feasting on a barn owl. I
kind of wish it had been the other way around.
