I stopped doing BBS routes a couple years ago when I could no longer hear
some of the species I was supposed to be censusing. I think that is the
obligation of birders who can no longer perform the duties of a BBS route.
It's time for younger ears to step up and carry forward this effort which
has run for about 50 years and gathered lots of good data. It is
challenging, but rewarding.
I found Pinyon Jay, Redstart and an Ovenbird in Jefferson county during my
years of effort, PLUS great morning views of Mt. Jefferson!

I have contributed to the vacant routes in western Oregon by abandoning the
routes I ran for years: Cool Camp in the Tombstone Pass area, and Scio, in
the Cascade foothills between Scio and Silverton. I don't have good reasons
for abandoning them, other than disappointment in my declining ability to
hear kinglets, desire to avoid commitments, and laziness.
But I recommend BBS routes for birders, and these two are particularly rich.
