One of the predicaments I find myself in is reporting stuff that
makes me go hmmm, even though that stuff will probably never be
satisfactorily resolved...
Today while checking the Astoria Sewage Ponds for possible storm
fall-ins, I flushed a snipe. It was absolutely silent. It popped up,
flew fast, no more than 3 or 4 feet off the ground in a straight
flight up the axis of the wetland and disappeared.
I seemed small for a snipe and short-billed. It had a strongly
patterned face and bars running down the length of the body. It
seemed short-tailed and big-headed for it's size. (I made a drawing I
might post later).
Those of you familiar with Astoria Sewage Ponds are also probably
familiar with the wetland leading into the ponds. That is NOT the
wetland I'm talking about. There is also an extensive wet area
between the ponds and the hillside directly adjacent to the
middle sewage pond accessible by walking the fence line. None of the
wetland are particularly convenient to bird...
