Paul, others,
We received a post on the Coos/Curry WhatsApp list that a Facebook post
on Oregon Birding of an American Oystercatcher found potentially in
Brookings. The post was a photo with no caption of date or
location. Following up on this, Gerry reached out to the poster and
the word was that the bird was seen last Sunday at Harris Beach St
Pk. HOWEVER, the post was subsequently removed from Facebook, and no
further details have come forward. There are no reports of the bird.
There was a lot of confusion about who saw the bird and where it was
actually seen. It also appears that the inquiries about the bird
resulted in the post being deleted, so we have no idea if the post was
accurate or not.
Unfortunately this is a case of some basic birding guidelines not being
followed (ie, giving the date and location and species ID when you post
to any birding forum), and it seems possible ruffled feathers after
being asked to clarify a post. The result is a lot of confusion about
whether this bird was seen in Oregon at all.
That is literally all most of us know. Apologies for all the confusion.
Cheers
Dave Lauten
