Rich, OBOLites, When I read posts like yours below, I am saddened. You should not feel sorry for posting a sighting of a bird to a birding list. Sharing our enthusiasm for birds and telling others where to see a special bird is the reason lists like OBOL exist. Please continue to share your sightings. You brought joy to all those who got to see this wonderful Burrowing Owl because you posted direction to it. The hubbub you saw on OBOL has happened before in other years. Some folks say the birds are stressed. Others say the birds don't care. Some like to rant at photographers. The exchange is fairly predictable. Perhaps some individuals misbehave and get too close or make the bird fly. That's their fault, not yours. They're the ones who should say, "Sorry." Self-censorship of our own sightings (not posting to OBOL) is faulty logic because: a) it assumes that the membership of the list is not responsible; that "they" will misbehave b) it puts you in the role of hall monitor, superior observer, and guardian of wildlife c) it cheats the membership of the fun of seeing the bird d) it defeats the reason we have a birding list Please keep sharing, good birding, Happy New Year, Paul T. Sullivan ------------------------------------------ Subject: Linn Burrowing Owl Date: Sun Dec 29 2013 11:20 am From: rfadney AT hotmail.com I honestly have to say the after reading all the hubbub recently about "the" Linn County Owl, accusing photographers, other birders, of folks disturbing the bird etc.. That I am truly sorry I was the first to post it and it's location and will think twice next time I find a special species in our area. I will most likely share the next find (if I am so lucky) with one or two trusted folks. Good Birding y'all and Happy New birding year!
