Good Morning HU CLDCers, Bison Alum and Computer Engineers
Over the last year, I have been a Lead Advisor for Dynamic Mathematical
Visionary (DMV) NSBE Jr Chapter (www.dmvnsbejr.org<http://www.dmvnsbejr.org>)
that meets at Howard University. In the course of a year and a half we have
grown from 135 to 200 scholars grades k-12 (ages 4-17 years old). We support 33
engineering/math competition teams, provide Spanish, Mandarin and Math
enrichment classes, Gavel club (Jr. Toastmasters) and a Step Team. Lastly, we
have a partnership with Blacks at Microsoft (BAM) to provide a Saturday morning
(bi-weekly) 10 class Coding Academy.
Curriculum Description
CS Fundamentals: Students will create programs with sequencing, loops, and
events. They will translate their initials into binary, investigate
problem-solving techniques, and develop strategies for building positive
communities both online and off. Average grade: K-3; Elementary
CS Discoveries: Emphasis on the design process. Through a series of design
challenges, students are asked to consider and understand the needs of others
while developing a solution to a problem. Average grade: 4-6; Middle School
CS Principles: This unit continues to develop students' ability to program in
the JavaScript language. Students will create a series of simple applications
(apps), each highlighting a core concept of programming. Average grade: 7-12;
High School
On Thursday Derek Lloyd, who was planning to teach our MS/HS class informed me
that unable to fulfill his previous commitment due to health reasons. Knowing
Derek's love for teaching (especially children) it hurt my heart to hear him
say he couldn't do it. I am reaching out to the local DMV CLDC (or Computer
science) community to ask if there is anyone for can help teach our 10 lecture
MS/HS class. We need at least 2 Senior teachers (I have one from BAM).
As an instructor you will not be alone. The BAM/DMV NSBE Jr Academy is
supported by 10 dedicated 30 HU collegiate students (primarily Computer
Science). The Collegiate students are the lead learners in the class room and
support the instructor. As the semester transpires the Collegiate students take
over the Teaching the class.
The commitment is twice a month on Saturday mornings 10am-1pm, 3 hours of class
time (two 1.5 hour slots) and there is twice a month 1 hour webcast to
pre-brief the Collegiate volunteers. All curriculum is provided through
Code.org. We also tag up every Friday with BAM to run through logisitics for
the program but that would not require regular attendance by an instructor.
This commitment would be a total of 6-8 hours a month.
Please let me know if you are interested ASAP. We meet today at the Howard
University Middle School of Mathematics and Science (405 Howard Place, NW). If
you are interested in coming by please call/text me (202.494.9090) or email me
at Aprille.j.ericsson@xxxxxxxxx<mailto:Aprille.j.ericsson@xxxxxxxxx> or
dmvnsbejr@xxxxxxxxx.
Best regards
