Hi, Peter,
The response from the TPPD to the dangerous situation along Piney Branch
(downed trees, downed power lines across the street, a stuck bus) after the
storm yesterday evening was lame at best.
Rather than setting up “Road Closed” signs and traffic cones where Philadelphia
and Eastern cross very busy Piney Branch Road, they literally strung police
tape across this state highway (which were easily blown through by speeding
cars) and lit a few flares (that last what, 20 minutes?).
They claimed they had so many other calls.
Well, I’ll tell you where I did find not one but two large “Road Closed” signs
and 5 traffic cones — on Takoma Avenue at Gist and at Boston. Granted, there
was a cracked utility pole on that one block, but nothing like tree branches
across the roadway and fallen wires along a mutiple-block length of Piney
Branch Road. And Takoma Avenue gets nowhere near the traffic tfat Piney Branch,
the pack mule of Takoma Park, gets.
Obviously, TPPD was overwhelmed ladt evening.
May I propose:
1. Quadrupling their budget for “Road Closed” signs and traffic cones.
2. Investing in some stationary strobe warning lights that can warn oncoming
traffic of danger ahead,
3: Adding some bright element to those black police uniforms (and I hope to God
they are not polyester because they must be sweltering in those). The black
uniforms render them literally invisible in low light and at night — dangerous
for them especially.
Many thanks for your consideration.

The following roads are still shut down due to power lines down:
Cedar Avenue between Philadelphia Avenue and Dogwood Avenue
Piney Branch Road at the 7400 block
There is a tree down on Takoma Avenue between Philadelphia and New York. The
road is still passable but one lane is blocked by the tree.
Please use caution while driving and be prepared to use an alternate route.
