With a wind chill at about 6° after 30 minutes we abandoned outdoor birding ...
instead we were invited by Jim Wagner into his cozy heated office to watch
through his picture windows the birds visiting his feeders. In the end we
tallied a respectable 31 species. We were ready to stop at 28 but with
Maryalyce's well remembered voice urging us on to make a round number we pushed
on for 30! Number 31 was a small flock of American Pipits seen only by me in
the fields at the end of the property.
Linda spotted the best bird in a perfect sighting of a Hairy Woodpecker. Best
treat were the Brown-headed Nuthatches(as many as 6 at a time)at the bird
feeder. Most spectacular treat were two male Purple Finch muddled in with a
number of House Finches.
Mallard,Bufflehead,Hooded Merganser,Ruddy Duck,Turkey Vulture, Killdeer,
Ring-billed Gull, Herring Gull, Mourning Dove, Belted Kingfisher, Red-bellied
Woodpecker, Downy Woodpecker, Hairy Woodpecker, American Crow, Carolina
Chickadee, Tufted Titmouse, Brown-headed Nuthatch 6, Carolina Wren, Eastern
Bluebird, American Robin, Northern Mockingbird, European Starling, American
Pipit, Song Sparrow, White-throated Sparrow, Dark-eyed Junco, Northern
Cardinal, Red-winged Blackbird, House Finch, Purple Finch, American Goldfinch.
