KCGC is the King Carter Golf Course, located south of Kilmarnock just off
Irvington Road. HQ is Hills Quarter, the community associated with the
golf course. NNAS is the Northern Neck Audubon Society.

Strange things happening on the BB trail. Nests where the young should
have fledged still have the babes present. Usually, fledging takes place
at 17-19 days. Today we have some young that are 20-21 days old and they
are still hunkered down in the nest. We finally concluded that the food
supply has been sparse, due to the cool weather. The length of time, from
hatching to fledging, is a function of the food supply. We were able to
see the last fledgling of a brood leaving the nest. Its siblings had
already left.

We had a guest riding with us today. Jerry Uhlman, writer for the Richmond
Times-Dispatch, accompanied us. He is gathering material for an article
on bluebird trails.

We have one new partial BB nest. The 3 chickadee young are still in the
nest. They should fledge by next week. The tree swallow eggs have
hatched; there are now 5 babies.

Here are the BB trail numbers:
Last week, 13+ eggs; this week, 3 eggs.
Last week, 77 young; this week, 72 young.
Last week, 5 fledged; this week 25 fledged.
Total fledged for the season: 30.
Should have a plethora of fledges next week....Tom
