BIRD WALK AT BUSHMILL MONDAY, OCTOBER 14 On Monday, October 14, the Northern Neck Audubon Society will conduct a bird walk led by Frank Schaff at Bush Mill Stream Natural Area Preserve in Northumberland County. Bush Mill Preserve is one of the Northern Neck’s many hidden gems. It offers forested and tidal habitat and an observation platform overlooking the freshwater tidal marsh. This is the beginning of fall migration and possible sightings are warblers, vireos, hawks, sparrows, early waterfowl (diving ducks, loons, and geese), great blue herons, bald eagles, osprey, and belted kingfishers. Car pools will leave Grace Episcopal Church in Kilmarnock at 7:15 a.m. Those driving directly to Bush Mill should meet there at 7:45 a.m. Directions are as follows: From Route 360 near Heathsville, take Rt. 201 South. Go 3.4 miles and turn left onto Rt. 642 (Knight’s Run Road). The preserve entrance is 0.3 miles on the left. From Route 3 at Lancaster Courthouse, take Courthouse Road (Rt. 600) North. Continue straight at McNeals Corner (now Rt. 201). Turn left Beanes Corner. Continue on Rt. 201 approximately 4 ¾ miles. Turn right onto Rt. 642 (Knight’s Run Road).
