BIRD WALK AT BUSHMILL MONDAY, OCTOBER 14

On Monday, October 14, the Northern Neck Audubon
Society will conduct a bird walk led by Frank Schaff at Bush Mill Stream
Natural Area Preserve in Northumberland County.

Bush Mill Preserve is one of the Northern Neck’s many
hidden gems. It offers forested and
tidal habitat and an observation platform overlooking the freshwater tidal
marsh. This is the beginning of fall
migration and possible sightings are warblers, vireos, hawks, sparrows, early
waterfowl (diving ducks, loons, and geese), great blue herons, bald eagles,
osprey, and belted kingfishers.

Car pools will leave Grace Episcopal Church in
Kilmarnock at 7:15 a.m. Those driving directly to Bush Mill should meet there
at 7:45 a.m.

Directions are as follows:

From Route 360 near Heathsville, take Rt.
201 South. Go 3.4 miles and turn left
onto Rt. 642 (Knight’s Run Road). The
preserve entrance is 0.3 miles on the left.

From Route 3 at Lancaster
Courthouse, take Courthouse
Road (Rt. 600) North. Continue straight at McNeals Corner (now Rt.
201). Turn left Beanes Corner.
Continue on Rt. 201 approximately 4 ¾ miles. Turn right onto Rt. 642 (Knight’s
Run
Road). The preserve entrance is 0.3
miles on the left.

Please call Frank Schaff at 804-462-0084 to let him
know that you are coming so he can notify you if the walk is cancelled. For
additional information about the Northern
Neck Audubon Society and activities, check the website at
