Eleven club members were joined by two campers at Belle Isle State Park on a gorgeous sunny day. Frank Schaff led the group and we had a nice high count of 42 species! The temperature soared and we peeled off our layers of clothing as it reached 79 degrees by the time we finished our walk in Belle Isle's various habitats. The birds are as follows: Red-winged Blackbird, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Field Sparrow, Song Sparrow, Northern Mockingbird, Northern Cardinal, Carolina Wren, Eastern Bluebird, American Crow, Chipping Sparrow, Brown-headed Cowbird, Yellow-rumped Warbler, SOLITARY SANDPIPER IN A PUDDLE IN THE CORNFIELD, Bald Eagle, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Northern Flicker, White-throated Sparrow, Red-tailed Hawk, Mourning Dove, Blue Jay, Double-crested Cormorant, Osprey, Pine Warbler, Brown-headed Nuthatch, Turkey Vulture, Wood Duck, Canada Goose, Downey Woodpecker, Forster's Tern, Ring-billed Gull, Horned Grebe, Bufflehead, Common Grackle, Greater Scaup, White-winged Scoter, Great Blue Heron Red-breasted Merganser, Wild Turkey, Tufted Titmouse and Mallard. Two Auditory birds were heard: Clapper Rail and a Common Loon. The Horned Grebes we saw, three of them, were in full summer plumage known by the reddish neck, Buffy gold "horns" on black heads. They showed up so nicely in the sunlight in the water on both Frank and Lance's scopes. The Green Frog and Peepers were making themselves heard. Ten of us were able to go to lunch at the Lancaster Tavern and we had a nice time as usual. Take care for now. Happy birding, Maryalyce J. Johnsen No virus found in this message.
