HUGHLETT POINT BIRD WALK SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 24 AT 9:00 AM
0n Saturday, November 24, the Northern Neck Audubon Society (NNAS) will conduct
a bird walk at 9:00 a.m. at Hughlett Point Natural Area Preserve in
Northumberland County. This preserve lies on a peninsula jutting into the
Chesapeake Bay and it offers a wonderful opportunity for viewing birds and
wildlife as it includes coastal forest, shrub, salt marsh, and sandy beach
habitats.
Fall is a prime time for bird watching because of the many migrating birds
coming through the Atlantic flyway. Possible sightings include bald eagles,
osprey, merlins, pine and yellow-rumped warblers, royal and Forster terns,
dunlins, brown pelicans, great egrets, American black ducks, mergansers,
buffleheads, loons, spotted and semipalmated sandpipers, semipalmated plovers,
brown creepers, Eastern phoebes, catbirds, swamp and white-throated sparrows,
belted kingfishers, flickers, and ruby-crowned kinglets.
Meet in the parking lot at Hughlett Point Preserve at 9:00 a.m. The GPS
address is 5411 Balls Neck Road, Kilmarnock, VA. Directions: From Burgess,
take Rt. 200 south. Go approx 8 miles and turn left (east) on Shiloh School
Road (Rt. 606). At the end of Rt. 606, turn right onto Balls Neck Road (Rt.
605). Go approximately a mile and half. The parking lot of Hughlett point
will be on the left. From Kilmarnock, take Rt. 200 north. Go approximately 5
miles and turn right (east) on Shiloh School Road (Rt. 606). At the end of Rt.
606, turn right onto Balls Neck Road (Rt. 605). Go approximately a mile and a
half. The entrance to Hughlett Point and the parking lot of Hughlett Point
will be on the left.
NNAS bird walks and programs are always open to the public. There will be
