VIR-MAR BEACH BIRD WALK MONDAY, JANUARY 11
On Monday, January 11,
the Northern Neck Audubon Society (NNAS) will conduct a bird walk at 8:30 am at
Vir-Mar Beach in Northumberland County.
This small beach offers an excellent vista at the confluence of the
Potomac River and the Chesapeake Bay. At this time of year there may be large
concentrations of wintering waterfowl.
Among possible sightings are Common Golden Eyes, Red Throated and Common
Loons, Surf and Black Scoters, Forster’s Terns, Gannets, Buffleheads,
Mergansers,
Tundra Swans and Long Tailed Ducks (formerly called Old Squaws).
Please consider
carpooling if possible. Directions are
as follows: From Kilmarnock, take
Route 200 N (E. Church St) 12. 7 miles to the stop light at Route 360 in
Burgess. Turn left on Rt. 360 W, go 1/8th
mile and turn right on Rt. 644 (Hacks
Neck Road).
Follow 644 for 3.6 miles and turn left onto Route 643 (Vir-Mar Beach Road).
Continue 0.7 miles to the end and arrive at
Vir-Mar Beach. From Warsaw, take
Route 360 E approximately 26. 5 miles to Burgess. Turn left on Rt. 644 (Hacks
Neck Road) which is 1/8th mile before the intersection of 360 &
Rt. 200 at the stoplight. Follow 644 for
3.6 miles and turn left onto Route 643 (Vir-Mar Beach Road). Continue 0.7
miles to the end and arrive at
Vir-Mar Beach.
Several pairs of
loaner binoculars will be available.
