BIRD WALK AT STRATFORD HALL SATURDAY, JANUARY 25
On Saturday, January 25, the Northern Neck Audubon Society (NNAS) will conduct
a bird walk at Stratford Hall Plantation at 9:00 a.m. Stratford Hall is the
birthplace of Robert E. Lee and home to four generations of the Lee family,
including Richard Henry Lee and Francis Lightfoot Lee, the only brothers to
sign the Declaration of Independence.
Stratford Hall, located in Westmoreland County, has a magnificent setting on a
high bluff above the Potomac River. Encompassing a total of 1,700 of its
original acres, the plantation is still managed as a farm today. The varied
landscape and more than three miles of scenic nature trails lined with
wildflowers in the spring and summer provide countless viewing opportunities
for birding and wildlife enthusiasts. Among possible bird sightings are bald
eagles, wild turkeys, tundra swans, buffleheads, hooded mergansers, Canada
geese, dark-eyed juncos, Eastern phoebes, and belted kingfishers.
The GPS address is 483 Great House Road, Stratford, VA 22558. Directions are
as follows: From Kilmarnock, take Route 3 west approximately 48 miles. Turn
