I got the 530 (upgraded from 520) 2-3 years ago to have Garmin's latest
technology. It does all we need as far as navigation, data capture, and
wireless connectivity. And, it's faster than the 520 (better CPU).
The main reason I picked it is because it's NOT a touch screen. Using the
buttons, you can use the device with gloves...

I had the 130 and liked it but sold it and got a 530 when they went on sale.
It's somewhat larger so more readable but not that much larger than the stem.
The main reason I wanted it was for when I'm on a tour that provide routes as
GPX files. While you can use them on the 130 they only show where you've been,
not what's to come. Sometimes I would only realize I was supposed to make a
turn until I passed it. The 530 gives you better advanced warning. It includes
US mapping that you can view on the screen in color(ish). When you are
following a route it there is a climbing screen that shows you how much more
you have to climb. I also discovered that the 530 includes a thermometer which
the 130 does not. Although there is a weather widget that you can install on
either unit that gets the temp from the internet, I like having the actual
temperature. The 530 is more powerful and thus more complex; it has SEVEN
buttons and I find it harder to use than the 130. I would have thought that the
more expensive 830 would be easier but apparently not. One more difference is
the 530 has wifi which you wouldn't think would matter, but with the 130 when I
got back to my garage and ended a ride it would take a while for it to connect
to my phone via bluetooth and upload ride data to the web and then for the
garmin connect app to get it and notify me that the ride info was available to
view. With the 530 it connects to my home wifi and almost instantly uploads the
data.

travel while the entry level just randomly throws you to whatever time it picks

The cadence sensor can you tell you when you hit 88 RPM, at which point if you
are putting out enough gigawatts you can go Back to The Future.

I won’t ride without my VARIA. Also, def. get a cadence and speed sensor for
your bike if you get a computer. Pairs with your Garmin and provides very
accurate readings.

I second the 830 and Varia. Touch screen makes it so much easier to use the
device, and also make any changes in setup.

Hi Tony,
I have the Garmin Edge 130 Plus. It cost me $200. It has all the
features you need including time, speed and distance while you ride and then
stores statistics for each ride which includes a map for later review. The
screen is black and white (more expensive Garmins are bigger and have color
displays.)
I have the Garmin paired with Radar (Garmin Varia RTL515). It also cost about
$200) that alerts you to traffic coming from the rear (occasionally it picks
up a cyclist who is overtaking you when there is no traffic). I think this is
a great for safety ad on. It has greatly reduced the amount of time if spend
looking in my rearview mirror.

Tom, and all dawgs:
I think a noon start is too late. By the time I get home and get cleaned up,
the day is shot. However, 10:00 am start is do-able (and a little warmer) if
acceptable to the group.
Please RSVP your earliest with start time preference.
