Title: Teaching Reading to Adult English Language Learners: A Reading Instruction Staff Development Program This comprehensive and self-contained resource was developed by the Center for Applied Linguistics for the Adult ESOL Program, Office of Adult And Community Education, Fairfax Co. Public Schools. The resource contains materials for four workshop sessions, including a Facilitator Guide, Facilitator Notes, and Participant Handouts. The sessions include: Introduction to Teaching Reading, Selecting Appropriate Texts and Developing a Good Reading Lesson, Focus on Pre-Reading, Putting a Reading Lesson Together.

Title: Teaching Reading to Adults: A pack of resources and ideas for adult literacies tutors This tutor/teacher pack contains many strategies and ideas for teaching reading to adults. It covers topics such as working with low level readers, working with mixed ability groups, finding appropriate materials, teaching and learning approaches.

Title: Techniques for Teaching Beginning Level Reading to Adults
The author has teaching experience at The Community Center in Cambridge, MA where her students are at the beginning-level of reading (equivalent to grade 0-2). She is concerned about applying reading acquisition research conducted with children to teaching adults in ABE classes to read.

This booklet is a compilation of research on vocabulary. While much of the research comes from the K-12 literature, the concepts are highly practical for use in the adult education classroom.

Title: Affecting change in literacy practices: Impact of two dimensions of instruction Motivated by issues of intergenerational literacy, the researchers investigated the extent to which the use of authentic materials and the level of collaboration between students and teachers affect learners' literacy practices outside the classroom. The researchers used mixed methods and provide data as well as learner snapshots in this resource.

Title: How should adult ESL reading instruction differ from ABE reading instruction? This article provides a research based rationale to identify which general teaching reading strategies work for all learners and which of those strategies do not work for English Language Learners.

Title: Improving Literacy of L1-Non-Literate and L1-Literate Adult English as a Second Language Learners This small study examines and compares the impact of a whole-part-whole method on literate and non-literate non-native speakers of English learning to read.

Title: Learning To Read: Literacy Acquisition by Children and Adults.
This report examines whether research on children's reading acquisition can inform adult literacy instruction. It first considers the implications of both narrower and broader concepts of literacy . The report then reviews the literature on (a) how children learn to read, (b) characteristics of low-literate adults, and (c) the practices of adult literacy programs. This review concludes that there are both important commonalities and differences between how children learn to read and how adults can be taught to read in literacy programs.

Title: Patterns of Global, Vowel, and Consonant Spelling Development in Adult Literacy Students This study involved adult low-literacy students who were enrolled in an Orton-Gillingham-based literacy program for four semesters during which time they received multisensory reading & spelling instruction consisting of four books specifically developed for adult learners.

Title: Patterns of Word Recognition Errors Among Adult Basic Education Native and Nonnative Speakers of English This two-page research brief addresses teaching higher level readers and how to support continued progress to higher levels of reading; their primary focus was on readers error patterns.

Title: Reading comprehension strategies for adult literacy outcomes
This research comprises content analysis of three common standardized tests for adults, commonly accepted as reasonable proxies for the global construct of adult literacy, to determine the comprehension skills that adults need to pass them.

Title: The Role of Vocabulary Instruction in Adult Basic Education
Vocabulary has long been recognized as a key factor in reading comprehension. In this chapter, Curtis analyzes research and theories on vocabulary, vocabulary acquisition, and reading comprehension.
