Indoor Growing: Common Flowering Houseplant Choices
Common house plants come in many varieties. Here is a small list of
eighteen varieties and a brief description of each.

Common flowering house plants come in many varieties. Here is a small list
of eighteen varieties and a brief description of each. This should give
you some indication of how this house plant might work for you. Listed is
the plants common name (first) as well as its Latin name (second). If a
plant is not available in your area and you have to order it, the florist
will have an easier time finding it using the plants Latin name. This is
important because different areas give plants different common names.
Photos are often helpful; if you cannot invest in a house plant guide book
simply look online using the Latin name and print out a picture of the
plant you desire. Many house plants are only available during certain
seasons such as spring and fall. Be sure to purchase certain plants at
those times rather than out of season.

Zebra plant (Aphelandra squarrosa) This plant has shiny dark green heart
shaped leaves with distinct white veins. In the center of the plant,
brackets of yellow flowers bloom. This plant loves bright light.

Begonia (Begonia x turberhybrida) There are numerous types of begonias.
This particular hybrid cultivated for indoor house plant use is especially
beautiful. The dark green leaves in conjunction with the large open faced
blooms of the flowers create a very striking plant. This plant needs a lot
of pampering.

Fuchsia (Fuchsia x hybrida) This is another hybrid cultivated for indoor
use or outdoor planting in locations with mild weather (no winter or
fall). It looks like a little tree or bush. Fuchsia flowers look like
exploding fireworks of pink red or purple. They are lovely heart shaped
bells that dandle at the end green leaved stems. The leaves are usually
medium to light green. This plant loves bright light.

Gardenia (Gardenia jasminoides) This house plant is very fragrant when
you can get it to bloom! This hybrid has glossy dark green leaves that are
quit showy without the blooms. The blooms are open faced, silky, cream
colored and have a light pleasant odor. Unless you live in a tropical
climate or have a green house this plant is high maintenance, not for the
novice!! This plant needs a bit of pampering.
