She is an avid gardener, but isn't quite sure how this is done. If she's right, how would I go about getting it to grow? Thank you in advance. -- Kathy, Windsor
A Your mother-in-law is right -- one can grow a plant from a pineapple top. It's been a while since we did this, but we had a new pineapple plant with a little patience.
We were only successful in producing a very small pineapple on top. This was due to warm daytime and cool nighttime temperatures and lack of proper humidity and sunshine.
We still enjoyed nurturing the plant to see it's final transformation. The pineapple is a member of the bromeliad family and given the ideal condition, will grow into a shrub which can grow from two to five feet tall and two to four feet wide.
When cutting off the top of a pineapple you will need to remove all of the excess fruit flesh; otherwise it will rot and may even kill the plant.
After trimming, carefully slice small, horizontal sections from the bottom of the crown until you see root buds that appear as small dots or circles on the flat, cut surface. Remove as little tissue as possible to avoid cutting into young stem tissue.
