Bonsai pots have unique qualities perfect for cactuses and most succulents. These Asian pots feature huge drain holes, and many even sport two holes to ensure the drainage is perfect. This is key to survival for all cactuses and succulents because these plants simply can't stand wet "feet."

The fact that bonsai pots are unusually wide and deep also contributes to their suitability. Dig up many species of cactuses, and you'll find their roots are shallow and travel a long distance. This adaptation allows them to quickly suck up surface water during rare rainfall events in their native deserts. The bonsai pot accommodates this perfectly.

Deeper pots can cause difficulties for surface-rooted cactuses because the soil remains damp deeper down, fostering bacteria and fungal growth. Such organisms are the main threat to succulent plants, which must remain internally sterile. Significant populations of these organisms, particularly in winter when cactuses are dormant, can quickly lead to the plant's demise.

What makes bonsai cactuses so wonderful is that the small pots can fit perfectly on a narrow windowsill. Buy the cactus as a little seedling so its roots can gradually fill the pot. Use designated cactus soil because it contains a good deal of sand, or take ordinary potting soil and mix it with equal parts masonry sand. Be sure to rinse anything from the seashore in freshwater because of the high salt content. Lay a piece of old window screen over the drain hole before filling to prevent the granular soil from falling through.
