Ah, those pesky Phalaenopsis. Lovely, for sure, but far too commonplace now. This kind of orchid (once rare and expensive) has become most popular houseplant in the world, according to the Royal Horticultural Society. So kudos to the clever plant breeders who elevated it to such heights.

.

But enough already. The Phalaenopsis is like Miley Cyrus. I just want it to stop parading its charms everywhere and go away.

.

To get a peek at more interesting orchids, the kind that are rare, tricky to grow and which obsessed collectors die for, dont miss the upcoming show of the Southern Ontario Orchid Society (SOOS). This extravaganza, the 35th in the societys history, promises the sights and scents of a tropical rainforest full of blooming orchids.

There are, amazingly, over 26,000 species of orchids around the world. They can be eight feet tall or no bigger than a thumbnail. They have peculiar names like Paphiopedilum, Thrixspermum, Dendrobium and the creepy Dracula diabola. And their sensual flowers, large and small, often look titillating, with the reproductive bits and pieces overtly on display to attract pollinating insects. (If you dont believe me, just eavesdrop on the titters and whispered comments by onlookers at a show. And think of their collective name, Orchis, which is derived from the Greek word for testicles. So there.)
