Blogging About Haiti: Arikia Millikan's Blog One of my college roommates lived and worked in Haiti for twenty plus years. Her daughter, Arikia, is the same age as my daughter. Until this past summer (2009) Arikia had never met her father, a Haitian man, nor had she met her Haitian half-sister. But in 2009 she visited them and got to know the Haitian part of her family. Her mother had always told her stories, shown her photos of Haiti and kept track of her father and his life. Arikia now has a blog that provides some personal insight about Haiti and how things are, how things work there. Her mother, someone who knows the ins and outs of Haitian life intimately, is fluent in Creole (Kreyol), recently emailed that she is going to buy some Haitian manufactured paint and pay a friend of hers to hire Haitians to paint the hotel he manages, one that is still in good shape. That way she knows for sure that the money she donates goes to support an up and running Haitian industry and to pay Haitians, who desperately need the dignity of working for pay, to begin to rebuild their country. She feels this is the only way that donated funds will ever reach those in most need. Arikia is a University of Michigan graduate, a former editor of The Michigan Daily, who has been living and working in New York City, is currently doing research for Nathan Silver's forthcoming book that has something to do with environment and the economy. Arikia's blog has lots of good information on Haiti, the quake, what's really happening there from someone who very personally knows the situation, the history, the socio-economic structure of Haiti. It is refreshingly the point of view of a young person. Here is Arikia Millikan's blog: <http://millikandaily.com/> - Norma Curry .
