I run an HP Laserjet 2420 with the generic Postscript driver w/out issue,
though I can't say as I've ever printed off Ebay. I've found it MUCH
better to buy a used or refurbished business line printer than it is to go
with anything on the shelf at BestBuy (et al).
As to the issue, there have been times when I was not able to get a Windows
printer to work on Linux, my ex-father-in-law's brother MFP. Brother even
had "Linux Support" but it just plain didn't work reliably. I'd tinker and
tinker and got it to work on one and only one of my Linux machines (Mint,
as I recall). In that situation, I did use his Windows machine to share
the printer to my Linux boxes... so a VM is a viable way to go.
As to Virtualbox being a poor hypervisor, I'll agree that it's not anywhere
near as efficient as Hyper-V, but given the horsepower we have in our
machines, I don't see it as an issue. I'm typing this message on a 7 year
old HP laptop that runs multiple VMs in Virtualbox without issues. Where
hyper-v works great, but it should be noted that this is NOT an option for
Windows10 Home as the feature is not available on that version of Windows.
As to not being able to get outside the local network, it is very easy to
stop it. Making the assumption that it is able to discounts his ability.
I'd also say that even if it did have access to the Internet, if it's not
being used to browse then it's likely still going to be a pretty safe
solution... much safer than having windows native with a Linux VM. The
only way that having Linux in the VM is safer is if you are sure to boot
the Linux VM and use it every time you're going to the Internet.

Mike Bell already mentioned that our experience with HP was about as bad
obvious that we all have Linux but quite unlikely that any of us have an
identical configuration.
The objective, early last years, was to get a Canon LBP6230dw working,
only in the USB connected mode. The further objective will be to get a
Canon D570 working after that.
I used to use the Konquerer browser because I already use Firefox within
KDE and I would prefer to go that route again but I may have to hold off on
that. See what magic Mike can work when he comes over.
There was hope that Ubuntu switching to their own DE might solve a bunch
of these desktop issues but the way I read the tea leaves, that's not about
to happen and I am not about to go the Gnome route.
As Mike posted, installing a Debian version of the Firefox browser might
help so that's what we will do first and we will see what happens.
