Ramos Horta in UN race

LISBON: East Timor's Nobel Peace Prize-winning Foreign Minister, Jose Ramos
Horta, is reportedly on the shortlist of candidates to succeed the UN
Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, when he steps down at the end of this year.
"I was informed more than one month ago by our ambassador to the UN that his
name is on a shortlist which is already being examined by the five permanent
members of the Security Council," the Portuguese Foreign Minister, Diogo
Freitas do Amaral, said.
The General Assembly appoints the secretary-general at the 15-nation Security
Council's recommendation, where the permanent members have veto powers.
